Ratings
Your rating is the shortest true description of how well you play 28. It goes up when you beat people who are better than you and down when you do not, and it is calculated on the server after every rated match — never by anything running in your browser.
Leagues
The leagues are presentation. Matchmaking, tournaments and the ladder all use the rating itself — so a league can be retuned between seasons without anybody's standing changing underneath them.

How it moves
Duo ratings
28 is not a game you win alone, so a single number per player leaves something out. Every pair who play together build a separate duo rating, with its own record: matches together, win rate, and the best run you have had.
It measures something the individual rating cannot. Two strong players who have never learned each other's signals will have a duo rating below both of them; two ordinary players who have played four hundred hands together will have one above both. The number knows.
Duo ratings move on rated matches you play as a pair — in the duo queue, or in a tournament you entered together.

A handful of rated matches is all it takes to get a number that means something.
